About the site
Built in the 1960s, Sheer House was designed to revitalise West Byfleet village, with an offer of new retail and office units, a public library and parking facilities. Now that the office space has closed, local sentiment has increasingly fallen out of favour with the site and it is widely perceived as being out of keeping with the surrounding area.
The site borders on three roads in the village centre: Lavender Park Road, Station Approach and Commercial Road, and is conveniently located a short walk away from West Byfleet railway station. It is also a neighbour to a wide variety of local businesses and restaurants, making it a natural centre point of the community.
In 2017, planning consent for the demolition of the existing structure and construction of new residential units was approved by Woking Borough Council. Retirement Villages Group Ltd acquired the site in June 2020 with the intent of bringing forward a new retirement community with associated retail and leisure units.
